Popular Citizen Farewelled
Mrs. M. Curran, tSenr., and Mr. and Mrs. H. Curran entertained a number of guests on Saturday evening to bid farewell to Mr. "Jock" Calder, a popular local citizen and former headmaster of the Opiki School. At an opportune time, Mr. R. E. Downes, on behalf of those present, congratulated Mr. Calder on his 40 years in the teaching profession, three and a half of which he had spent as headmaster of the Opiki School. Mr. Downes said that all were sorry to see Mr. Calder ieave Shannon and his many friends would miss his cheery disposition. However, after so many years of service' he had earned retirement. He then asked the guest of honour to accept a small gift as a mark of appreciation from those present, and hoped he would derive many hours of pleasure from it. He also presented a small gift from his intimate friends. All joined with 'Mr. Downes in wishing the guest of honour very many years of health and happiness in his retirement. In his short but fitting reply, Mr. Calder sincerely thanked his friends for their kind remarks and expressed the hope that he would have the pleasure of seeing them at his new home. Mr. Calder has recently purchased a 400-acre property on Stewart Island, where he has spent so much of his time in past years, and will leave this week fpr his new home. Mr. Calder leaves Shannon and Opiki with the best wish.es of all who have had the pleasure of knowing him.
