Bakers Worried Over Dried Fruit Shortage

AUCKLAND, May 5. The uneertainty of future supplies of dried fruits used in the baking tra'de, was viewed with coneern at today 's session of the annual eonference of th.e New Zealand Federation of Bakers and Pastrycoolcs. The meeting noted par-t-icularly that reports had been received of erop failures in Australia. In view of this the federation decided to instruct its couneil to seek an assurance from the Government that all other avenues of supply of dried fruits would be explored. It was stated by one member that he understood some supplies may be seeured from South Africa. The quality of New Zealand made egg pulp supplied to .tlie baking trade, was critieised. It was stated . by one member that his firm had found that almost every third tin of New Zealand pulp was unfit for human consumption and had to be destroyed. Instanees were quoted where foreign matter of an objectionable nature had been found in the pulp. It was decided that the eonference should make representations through its couneil to the appropriate authorities, for improvements in the preparation and distribution of pulp.
