Must Root Out The Reds, Says Mr. Holland

"WELLINGTON, May 3. "We must destroy Communism in New Zeaiand before it destroys us," said the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. S. G. Holland, 011 his return to New Zeaiand today- from Australia whieh, he said, liad been rocked by the diselosures of eommunistic activities in the industrial field.

"As iii New Zeaiand, so is Australia 's industrial system riddled witn communism, ' ' said Mr. Holland. "Fublic opinion, sliocked by th.e sensational Sharpley artieles, is demanding that the Government should get tougb with the Reds." Mr. Sharpley 's confession tliat he himself helped other Comniunists rig union election ballots and plan to burn ballot boxes, showed, said Mr. Holland, the length to which. they would go to aehieve their ends. "Kid glove tactics are no good in dealing with these wreckers. They must be rooted out and debarred from positioxis where they can serve their t'oreign masters and disrupt the organisations of decent workers." In New Zeaiand, added Mr. Holland, a mere haudful of fellow travellers thought they could do as they liked, defy the Governnient and break the law at will. So far they had been reniarkably successful. ' ' Comniunists thrive on speeehes about ' Why I Fight Communism said Mr. Holland. "It is aetion firin and resolute' that we want and not brave speeclies and constant capitulations. These people are out to destroy our British way of life. " The majoritv of workers were decent, industrious, honourable. people but the Reds made it too tough for theiu and their families if they dared raise objections at union meetings. So they stayed home. "There is a simple remedy, that is, an independently supervised secret ballot for union positions and on striKe issues, with adequate penalties for noiiO'bservance» That is the NatioAu Rarty's policy. The Reds fear the secret ballot and know tbe rank and iile will not tolerate tbe present dictatoriaJL powers of their union bosses," conduded Mr. Holland.
