Smaller Entries At Levin Society's Show All the glorious colours of winter N were in evidence at the Levin Horbicmtural Society's chrysanthemum show in the Regent Hall yesterday. Aithough entries were not large, they were as heavy as might be ex- ' pected for Lfie season and some of che most beautiful and exquisite b ooms in the district were on display . In the ' cut flowers and dec-->rative sections, the deep yellow and orange shades of African mari- . golds vied with purple centred . stock for prominence, while scat- ■ cered throughout the tables were the varied colours of dahlias and de.phiniums. In .he special displays, of which. there were several, Mrs. R.^ W. Evans received" the award for the most meritorious exhibit. Both novel and arastic, her display was in an overall toning of autumn shades, and was made up of many variefcies of fruit, vegetables and flowers. The • vegetable section was large and of excellent qua'ity. The chrysanthemum, in which nature has taken all the colours of the season to give a display to delighb the eye, was seen in profusion. President's Remarks. Pribr to the onening ceremony, fche president of the society, Rev. E. T. King, called on Miss H. E. Bowen to present a fioral spray to Mrs. W. Lett, one of the society's most energetic members. Mr. King weicomed two other memfcers of the society, Mr. P. Young, who had a ways been a great heip, and Mr. W. J. Summers. There was quality in the show if not such a great quantity, remarked the speaker. One of the Pleasing aspects was that all the blooms were grown locally. It was very hard io get sufficient interest to present a large show, he continued, adding that so many. women's organisations were holding small shows that .hey detracted interest from the main function. He appealed to these organisations to eo-operate with the society in making the shows a success. Mr. King thanked the exhibitors and expressed the hope that the popularity of the society would grow apace. He then announced the winners of the poin.s nrizes and other special awards as iollows: — Pfints nrizes. — Open classes: Mr. B. W. Bird. Amateur class: Mr. E. Findsen. Novice class: Miss N. Blackburn. Cut blooms: Mr. W. J. Summers. Decorative: Mrs. L. J. Hunter. Junior decorative: Margaret Petersen. Vegetables: Mr. A. D. Brash. Champion of champions bloom: Mr. B. W. Bird. Champion of amateur class: Mr. Findsen. Champion of novice class: Miss N. Blackburn. Most meritorious exhibit: Mrs. R. Evans. Mr. Summer s won the West Egginton Challenge Cup, awarded to the exhibitor with the mos, noints in the year's three shows. He also won this cup in 1948. Show Officially Opened. It was with appreciation that she accepted the honour conferred on her, said Miss Bowen, in declaring the show officiafly-open. It was Ihe .first time she had ever opened a flower show. She would like to congratulate the president and committee on the excellent organisation which had gone into the show7 to make it such a success, and expressed the hope that the society would go ferward always and create interest in the district. Miss Bowen said that she felt the home garden competition created great interest in the society's affairs, and remarked that she hoped it would be continued. Extending her congratulations to aT the prize -winners, Miss Bowen then declared the show open. Thanking Miss Bowen for her remarks, Mr. King expressed his appreciation of the work done by the judges and stewards. The judges and stewards in the /various sections were as follows: — Chrysanthemums : Judge, Mr. M. D.j HoPows, Palmerston North; s e w--ards, Mesdames J. W. Clarke and E. Carpenter and Mr. H. B. Tomlinson. Decorative: Judge, Mrs. M. McGilligan (Otaki),; stewards", Mesdames W. Smaill and R. Anderson and Miss L. Blackburn. Cut blooms: Judge: Mr. J. Dallenger (Levin); stewards, Mesdames A. W. Parton and H. Tilyard. Vegetables: Judge, Mr. W. Copping (Levin) ; stewards, Messrs A. G. Disher and C. A. Guy.
