Heavier Vegetable Supplies To Market
Messrs Townsend and Paul, Ltd., fruit and produce merchants, Wellington, report that .during the past week supplies of vegetables have been much heavier and values • have on the whole eased slightiy. There is a particularly strong demand, however, for caulifiower, green peas, beans an'd brussel sprouts, all these lines realising exceptional high values. With the end of summer fruits a few peaches have been coming to hand, bringing up to 19s box. Late this weeK outside tomatoes returned up to 27s 6d per case. Yardings of poultry have been slightiy easier and the demand had increased accordingly. There is a very strong demand for all varieties of fiowers, violets in particular realising mosi attractive values. Quotations are: — Fruit: Peaches, 15s to 19s; tree tomatoes, red 12s to 18s; yellow, 9s to 13s; Chinese gooseberries, besc, 26s to 32s; others, 20s to 25s; Meyer lemons, 10s to 18s; tomatoes, red, 20s to 27s 6d; coloured, 12s to 18s half cases; passion fruit, ls to ls 6d per 'dozen. Vegetables: Beans, runner, ls to ls 2d; stringless, ls to ls 7d; peas, 9d to ls 4d; sprouts, ls 4d to ls 8d, all per pound; beetroot, 4s to 8s; cucumbers, 30s; let'tuee, choice, 10s to 15s; others, 5s to 9s; leeks, 12s to 18s; ' marrows, 4s 6d to 7s; rhubarb, 8s to 30s; silverbeet, 2s 6d to 6s 6d; spinach, 12s to 18s; white turnips, 3s to 5s; cabbage, savoy, 7s to 12s; -drumhead, 9s to 15s; cauliflowers, 17s to 27s 6d; parsnips 15s to 19s sacks; carrots, 10s to 13s sugar bag; kumeras, 38s; onions, 10s; potatoes, 14s to 17s per cwt.; swedes, 4s 6d to 5s 6d bag; mint, 6d to 9d; parsley, 4d to ls; radish, 3d to 6d; Chinese cabbage, ls to ls 2d per buiich. Poultry: White Leghorn hens, 3s to 6s; Black Orpington hens, 6s 6'd to 11s; white ducks, 6s to 14s 6d; coloured, 4s 6d to 10s; geese, 6s 6d to 7s all each; turkeys, 2s 2d to 2s 3d; cockereis, ls 9d to 2s per pound live weight. Fiowers: Poppies, tangerine, 4s 6d to 5s; art, 5s to 9s 6d per gross; violets,- 4s 6'd to 6s * per dozen bunches; chrysanthemums, 6d to 2s per bunch according to quality.
