April Meeting Of Shannon Institute

At the April meeting of the Shannon Women's Institute, held last week, Mrs. D. A. Fitzgerald presided over a good attendance of members. A motion of sympafhy with the relatives of the late Mr. H. W. Knowles was 'carried in silence. Mrs. Jamieson, of Christchurch, was weleomed as a visitor to the meeting, where.she renewed many old friendships. The jjpresident asked that all members join in the affairs of the institute as much as possible, stressing the fact that a president could not make a successful organisation without the interested and enthusiastie help of all the members. A letter was received from the Levin institute extending an invitation to be present at its birthday celebrations. Mesdames Thorne and ROberts • were appointe'd delegates to the federation annual meeting and a full discussion of the remits for that meeting took place. It was reported that the banner competition for the next Manawhenua group rally, to be held in Oroua Downs, was a handworked handkerchief. Detailed arrangements for the celebration of the 23rd birthday were made. It was decided to write a letter of congratulations to Mrs. J. Newton, who has received advice that she secured nine iirsts and two seconds in the Royal Show at Sydney recently. Mrs. Newton has been generous in showing her work and explaiping her methods at institute and group rallies throughout the district. . Mr. A. Nixon, ■ of the Regioiial Council of Adult Education, spoke to the meeting on the 1949 programme, and explained how the many courses could be used by the institute. The drama circle aceepted his offer of help with its next production. Each member was asked to bring a written programme for one meeting to the May meeting; ani. it is hoped to thus draw up a series of monthly programmes. to suit every taste.
