BIGGEST UNION RE-AFFIRMS ARBITRATION
WELLINGTON, April 30. The New Zealand Engineers' Uniop is now the biggest trade union in thij country with 30 branches and 22,265 members. There are six branches with a membership of almost 6000 in the Wellington Industrial District. The national secretary (Mr. J. Neale) stated during a three-day conference which concluded in Wellington oq Thursday that the union was also an interested party in six" apprenticeship orders covering 5570 apprentices. Members of the union are covered by 57 awards and agreements. At the conference the union pledged its support for the La'bour Government and reaffirmed "its policy of settling disputes by the machinery pfovided under the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act. The Minister q£ Labour (Mr. Mc» Lagan) addressed the conference ancl mentioned the attaeks being made on the arbitration system by members oi the Communist Party.
