Obituary
MR. HERBERT W. KNOWLES. The Shannon district lost another of its pioneer settlers on April 13, with the' passing of Mr. Herbert William Knowles in the Palmerston North Hospital after a short illness. Born at Nelson 85 years ago, he was the son of the late Mr. Henry Hamilton Knowles and Mrs. Knowles, who resided at Nelson, Lyttelton, Kaikoura and Bulls before making their home in Palmerston North in 1895. Mr. Knowles was the third of seven sons and his. six brothers predeceased him. He came to Shannon in 1890 and eariy in 1893 married the eldest daughter the late Mr. and Mrs. iC. M. Richards, who also came to Shannon in 1890. The late Mr. Knowles was a keen follower of- sport and for a number of years was captaln of Shannon's first cricket club. He was a founBowling Club and was recently apBowling Club and was recently appointed a life member. With over 40 years of membership to -his credit, he was a, very enthusiastic bowler and played until a few weeks of his passing. He also took ah active part in the social life of the township in the early days, and was one of those pioneers who stumped and cleared the land for the present domain. He was' for many years an ofiice holder and until the time of his death an active member of the Ven. Bede's Anglican Church since it was erected 51 years ago. He also served on one of the early school committees. The -service at the Ven. Bede's Church and at the graveside was conducted by Rev. M. J. S. Wheeler. The pall-bearers at the church were his club-mates of the bowling club, while a guard of honour of bowlers was formed at the Shannon cemetery. The pall-bearers at the cemetery were Messrs H. E. Knowles (Wellington), D. G. LengWard and L. Knowles (Palmerston North) , R. Clark (Wellington) and E. L. and A. H. Richards (Shannon) . The deceased gentleman is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. H. G. Leng-Ward (Shannon) and one son, Mr. . Herbert E. Knowles (Wellington). Mr. D. G. Leng-Ward (Palmerston North) , Mrs. R. Clark and Alison and; Frances Knowles (Wellington) ara grandchildren. There is one greatgrandchild, Peter Clark. Mesdames W. B. Giesen (Tauranga) , O. Johnson and W. Thorn (Auckland) are sisters.
