Latest Steps In Dispute Of Carpenters

WELLINGTON, April 28. A special national conference of the Nevv Zealand Carpenters7 and Joiners' L'nion w'hich eonciuded in Wellington today, issued a call to all branches of ' tlie union to take decisive action if tlie 1 ' seab oi'gamsation ' 7 is registered by tlie Minister of Labour, Mr. McLagan. Tlie conference reached tliis decision after a tvvo-day discussion on tlie car-j pcuters7 dispute at Auckland. A vote of no-conlideuoe in tlie Minister vvas also recorded. Tlie national president of the union, Mr. L. L. Langley, of Christchurch, said tliese decisions vvere embodied in resolutions adopted unanimously by tlu conference. Tlie national secretary, Mr. R. Stanley, of Auckland, announced tlie resolutions as follow: — "Tliis conference congratulates the j Auckland sectiou of our union in our j iigiit l'or justice. \\ e appreciate tnat i tsvery move to destrov unity has in tlie main been countered by tlie solidarity oi' tlie best eleuients of our union. "Tlie conference, viewing all tlie circunistances of tlie dispute, reaflirms our decision to make avaiiable tlie vvliole oi' tlie resources of tlie union m our deteinination to continue tlie strug gie to its successful conclusion. "The conference condemns tlie actiou of the exeeutive of the Lederatiou of Labour following the decisions of tlie national rouncil of tlie fedorutiou, to give moral and linancial sapport and deplores the decision oi' the Government to cancel tlie registration of tlie Auckland section of our union. "The conference condemn.s ihe ac tion of the Minister of Labour in tlireateniug to register a seab organisation under any circunistances and ro-c-jniiiiends ail nicnibers to oppose strenuousiy tlie registration of such organisation. " We tiierefore call upon all bianc'ies of tlie union to take decisive actioii sliould sucli organisation be registered.

The conference also adopted the toi lovving resolution: "In vievv of tlio failure oi' the national executive of tlie Federation of Labour to convene a ineeting of its national council to. pursue the carpenters7 dispute further, we : ask tliat tliis matter be placed ou the | agenda of the fortlicouiing conference i of the federation.7' | The union deculed also to affiliate to tlie Peace and Anti-conscription i'ed- . eration. Tlie seamen 's delegate froin tlie Canadian vessel Tridale vvas heard on the details of Ihe Canadian seaiuen's dispute and resolutions vvere adopted declaring the ship black, condenining police interference in the dispute it Canada as strike-breaking, and giving full support to the Canadian seamen. . Mr. Stanley said a cable conveving the latter resolution vvould be sent to the Minister of Labour in Canada.
