Borough Administration

Only routine matters came forward for discussion at the fortnightly lneeting of the Shannon Borough Council, held on Tuesday evening. The Mayor, Mr. D. A. Fitzgerald, presided over1 Crs. B. Clayton, R. S. Downes, C. M. Cronquest, C. G. W|shart and H. Aitchison. Apologies for absence were received from Crs. V. J'. Batenian, H. L. Norris and L. G. Sayer. The town clerk, Mr. J. T. Bovis, reporte'd that he had written to Mrs. . F. A. Knowles conveying the sympathy of the council in her recent bereavement. The ' Mayor1 stated that the late Mr. Knowles was an early settler of Shannon and very highly esteemed. A motion of sympathy was carried in silence. On the motion of Cr. Wishart, building permits were granted to Shannon Motors for interiPr improvements and to Mr. K. Clough. The N.Z. Standards Ins'titute forwarded certain parts of building by-laws and further details" will be given in a future letter to the council. In his monthly report, the traffic inspector stated that a general patrol had been maintained in the borough. No f atal accidents' ' had oceurred and no minor a'ccfdents had come under his notice. • Five drivers were tested during *the mohth and all passed th'e required test. The standard of driving had been good and all appliqants had a good knowledge of traffic law. The'district civil engineer of the New Zealand Railways, replying to the council's request that both the Sheehan and Vance Streets railway crossings be sealed, stated that the Main Highways Boarcl was attending to the Sheehan Street crossing and asked that the council carry out the work at the Vance Street crossing. It was resolved to reply suggesting that the Railways Department ask • the highways boafd to also attend to the yance Street 6rossing, as the council did not have the required plant to carry out*work of that nature. The tender for the rental of the council's Nathan Terrace sectio.n (No. 322), as received from Mr. R. R. Lin'd, was accepted. Mr. W. S. Gardner's tender for Section 340 (Nathan Terrace) was accepted and Section 289 (Vance Street) was left in the hands of the town clerk to.obtain a tenancy. ' On the motion of the Mayor, it was resolved that the town clerk be authorised to have a'public notice board installed. The purchasing of a suitable oovering to protect employees from wet weather when work of an urgent nature was being carried out was left in the hands of Cr. Clayton to atten-d to. The removal of the present hot point in 'the library to a more suitable position was left in the hands of Cr. Cronquest tb arrange. It was resolved to purchase 100 yards of crushed river metal. The p'assing of accounts amounting to £61 13s 9d, which included £59 11s 3d for wages, terminated the business of the meeting.
