NANKING FALLS TO REDS
Received Mondav, 7 p.m. SHANGHAI, April 24. Communist trooos entered Nanking at 3.20 a.m. local time, unopposed, through the unguarded north-west eate. They quickly occupied all key points including Government buildings, banks and public utility buildings. Only a few casualties, most of them looters, were reported among the population. The Reds also entered Soochow and have captured Anking, the great river port 150 miles southwest of Nanking. In addition, five large towns near the Yangtze have been taken in the Communist sweep, including Taiyuan, the last Nationalist bastion north of the river, where the defenders are repor+c,d to have been wiped out. The swiftly advancing Red armies are meeting almost no reslstance
as they sweep towards Shanghai and the fall of this city — the fourth largest in the world — is believed to be only a matter of days.
