Convening Of By-EIection Campaign Meeting

N.

THORNLEY.

R. ' S.

, ANTCLIFF,

Sir, — We the undersigned wish to express our appreciation of the i space accorded to the speeches delivered by the munieipal -by- : election candidates who addressed electors in WilUams' reception room this week. It is unfortunate that the preremarks of the chairman, Messrs L. V. Trass and E. Tomlinson- and ourselves were omitted and also apologies from two other candidates, Messrs W. Seddon and FCroot.. This would have served to correct any misunders landing concerning the convening. of the meeting. This omission was probably due to shortage of space. The detads are as follows:— As conveners we first approached the Mayor, Mr. H. B. Burdekin, to act as chairman, considering that he was the niost desirable person in view of the munieipal importance of the meeting. Ea9h candidate was then personal'y invited to speak, eight of the nine, including Mr. A. W. Parton, signifying their ■intenlion of taking advantage of ■the offer. Arrangements were then put in hand and the date was fixed because this suited all the candidates and the chairman, At this juncture Mr. Parton intimated that he would alter his theatre screen slide, advertising His meeting in the ,Oddfellows' HaU on the same night, to hdvertise this eombined meeting, It was not until a later date that Mr. Parton advised that he had decided to continue his own meeting. It will be readily understood that it was then too late. to alter the arrangements, — Yours, etc.,

Conveners. Levin, April 21. It is not the policy of "The Chronicle" in reporting political and local body election campaign meetings to give pub'icity to the remarks of chairmen or mention apologies for alfsence. All possible i space is devoted to the sub.iects covered by the speakers, which are of primary importance. References by the candidates to the eircumstances leading to the clash in the date of the meetings were omitted for the same reason. — Editor.
