Responsi'bility Of Electors. Spsaking at a municipa. by-elec-tion campaign meeting on Tuesday night, Mr. R. S. Antcliff, one of the candidates, referred to the interest which was being taken in the contest. He expressed the hope that it worfd result in heavy polling on Wednes'day next. Mr. Antcliff emphasised that every ' elector had a responsibility to exercise his or'her vo.e. Ice-Axes Hum. - Static electricity in the air at the crater of Mount E'gmont caused the ice-axes of a group of climbers to hum in a peculiar way. Two of the party heard a bee-like buzz inside their caps at the same time. When they removed their caps, their hair stood on end. It has been often found necessary in alpine climbing in New Zeaiand and Switzerland to trail ice-axes on cords because of the risk of lightning. More Loan Authorities. "Our loan authorities are so near exhaustion that we can well say they are exhausted," remarked the chairman of the Horowhenua Eleclric Power Board, Mr. T. G. Vincent, at a meeting of the board yesterday. Consequently, the board would have to prepare a schedule of work to be done in the next two years and an estimate of its cost, and submit them to the Local Government Loans Board. A further loan could then be raised without taking a poll. Grim Warning. A grim warning was issued by the chairman of the Horowhenua Electric Power Board, Mr. T. G. ! Vincent, when speaking on power rationing yesterday. "I want you to bear in mind that it is not just next year, or the year after, or the year after that, but probably in four years' time that we are going to feel the restrictions," he said. In the meantime, if the board could build up a reserve of power, it should do so because a very lean time was ahead unle'ss Maraetai was finished and the weather conditions were perfect. Waterheater Control. Many consumers were under the misapprehension that the board had lifted pilot wire control on waterheaters, remarked a member of the Horowhenua Electric Power Board, Mr. C. S. Keedwe'l, at~the monthly meeting yesterday. The managing-secretary, Mr. R. A. Frederikson, pointed out that until such time as the system of rationing was sufficient to bring ihe consumption within the allocation, control would remain. Consumers would be advised personally when control was lifted. Sand Concert. For the second time in six months, the Levin Municipal Band is presenting a concert in the Regenb Theatre and devoting the proeeeds to a charitable cause. On this occasion the funds will be given to the Levin R.S.A. It will cake place on Anzac night and the band is rendering items in keeping with the spirit of Anzac, while ta.ented supporting artists have offered their services. A feature of the occasion will be the fact that the broadcaSting authorities Nwill be present to hear the band, with a view to offering it radio sessions at a later date. Gift Parcel Acknowledged. Twenty-five tins of cooking. fat recent'y forwarded under the Mayor's Food for Britain Fund have been received by the Cardiff (Wales) Welfare Committee through the British Ministry of Food. Wri-.ing to the Mayor, Mr. H. B. Burdekin, in appreciation of the gift, the director of welfare states: "It was issued to> aged and needy persons before Christmas and I can assure you it was greatly appreciated. As you may well imagine, a ccnsiderable amount of work is involved in supervising and arranging the distribution of this food, but this work is undertaken by myself and staff . On their behalf, therefore, may I say that I am more than pleased to be associated in the work of distributing your very generous gifts." 4
