Heavy Earthquake Strikes Chile

Received Wednesday, 11.10 p,m. i SANTIAGO, April 20. Heavy casualties and property damage are feared as the result pf an earthquake which rocked central and southern Chile Jast night. Thirty known dead were inmates of the gaol at Traiguen, which collapsed. Fur'ther casualties are feared in other towns with which communication is cut. The towns of Los, Sauces and San Rosendo Engel were badly hit. The latter is reported one-third destroyed, The earthquake was also especially noticeable aroimd the cities of Concepcion, Talca and Temuco. The State telegraph agency said the 'quake intensity at Temuca was nine, a high rating. The 'quake is helieved to have been centred between the cities oi Chillan and Concepcion where there* was. an intensity of eight and seven. There is no report of the damage or casualties at these points but Concepcion 's electricity failed for 30 minutes, causing a panic among tbe people.
