Shannon School Committee's Meeting
Matters of routine business were attended to at the April meeting of the Shannon School Committee, when the chairman, Mr. A. E. JefErey, presided over Messrs L. J. Bowler (secretary) , F. E. Bra'dey, R. E. Vinsen, E. H. Barber, S. J. Free, and Mesdames W. Easiton and C. Stern. An apology for absence was received from Mr. F. J. Lucinsky. The headmaster, -Mr. F. O. Burtt, was also present. In his report for the month of March, Mr. Burtt stated that the roll at the end of the month stood at 159 tooys and 149 girls. Six pupils had been admitted and two withdrawn. ' The attendance averaged 147 boys and 138 girls. The general health of the pupils was good. On account of the increased number of enrolments at the dental clinic, the pupils of Forms 1 and 2 had been enrolle'd with private dentists of their choice under free treatment. Only those who had been attended by the clinic were eligible for this free treatment. This arrangement would make it possible to give more regular treatment to pupils up ti Standard 4 and to pre-school-age children. Mrs. D. J. W. Thompson had taken up her duties as infant mistress at the beginning of the month. Mrs. J. B. Ward had been appointed on promotion to the Otaki School and Miss T. E. Bloomfield had resigned from the .service as from the end of this term. "The district nurse, Sister MacDonald, carried out her routine inspection of the pupils and has made her usual periodical visits to the school to inspect and treat a few cases of skin trbuble," continued Mr. Burtt. ."A medical inspection, by 'a medical practitioner, will take place soon and parents will be invited to attend this inspection if they so desire. "The meeting of the ParentTeachers' Association was ad'dressed by Mr. A. Haley, senior assistant at Horowhenua College. Mr. Haley spoke on the 'new look' in geography, a subject which proved to be of more than ordinary interest to the very fair attendance of members. The school owes thanks to Mr. R. J. Law for his generous donation of the recently-published hook by Mr. G. Leslie Adkin, entitled 'Horowhenua.' This publication will be a valuable ad'dition to the school library. Mr. R. R. Lind is also to be thanked for donating , a gatepost. It was resolved by the committee that letters of thanks be sent to the two gentlemen."
