SUCCESSFUL CARNIVAL
Horse Club's Annual Sports And Picnic A record attendance at the Monster Sports picnic organised by the Otaki and District Horse Club, and held on Easter Saturday, gives this progressive body the right to claim its gala to be the biggest event of its kind to be held in the district. * Foliowing weeks of preparation, the prospects looked anything but bright when rain, which had fallen earlier in the week and hindered preparacions somewhat, continued throughout Frfday, and it looked as if the club would be collecting its "pluvious" insurance, which it had had the foresight to take out. As so often happens locally, however, the day broke fine and fortune smi-led on the effort. The sun shone incessantly and the day was a briliiant one from all angles. The organisers of the effort thoroughly deserved the success which came their way, as a most comprehensive programme had been arrange'd. for the enjoyment cf patrons, wivh a galaxy of talent in all departments. With the excep- j tion of a brief luncheon adjournment, the programme was nonstop from 10.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. ' The axemen's events, introduced; on a modest scale last year, on this occasion catered for the best classes, and include'd in the entrants was a former New Zealandi champion in Whata Green, who, had ma'de a re-appearance at Taumarunui recently foliowing an extended visit to Australia. Other visiting stars came from Raurimu, Owhango, Wairoa, Wanganui, Pa-, hiatua, Paraparaumu, Akatarawa an-d one from the South Island. The large number of entries called for the three main events to- be run in heats, with a final for each. This meant . twelve events and patrons gave each winner pienty of encouragement with well 'deserved ovations. Anoiher former axeman of note to shine on Saturday was H. N. Wilson, of Wairoa, who, with. his companion L. McMann, were well rewarde'd for making the long trip. Whata Green gave a nerformance equal to his best when he -made a superb finishing drive to win the big event of the day and : annex-the valuable Murrell. Cup. ' Entries in the* horse events were a-necord also," competitors being present from the Hutt Valley to Palmerston North, and the prize money was well distributed. A totai of 263' entries 'meant a hectic day for officiais, who di'd an excellent job. These who found time to watch the Highland, dancing saw a per- ' former of ou.standing merit in this sphere, ths points prize for open dancing being won by Miss Coila Barrowman, . of Wellington, the winner of several championship awards throughout the country. All ages were catered for in this delightful department, and many Splendid efforts were forthcoming. Although competitors in the sawing events were not numerous, some high class performances were witnessed, with the successful contestants repeating their winning performances of a fortnight ago at the "big show" at Taumarunui. The single hand event saw the block vanquished in the fast time of 30 secs. Incidentally, 100 blocks were requlred and these took four men four days to prepare. The parking of the 350 cars that attende'd the picnic was no small task. It was ably Mndled by Traffic Inspector C. L. Davis and his assistants. During the afternoon the Otaki Band pleased with a number of selections, which Ibrought forth merited applause. Resuits are as follows:— Horse Events. Musical chairs. — R. Marino 1, M. Green 2, M.
