Meeting Reaffirms Decision On War Memorial
By a two to oue majority, the meeting held on Tuesday night to further consider 'the location of the Otaki War Memorial decided to feafflrrn v the decision made some months ago recommending the Borough Council to secure an area of land in the vicinity of the courthouse. A notice of motion to rescind this earlier decision so that recommendations from the Internal Affairs Department cou d be discussed, was carried on the casting vote of the chairman, Mr. C. F. Admore. The recommendations from the department favoured the extension of the present domain. These were fully dealt with and discussion revealed that the majority were of the opinion that the subsoil was unsuitable for additional sports areas, aithough all favoured the retention of the present site, which was considered an admirable one but not large enough. Fodowing a discussion on all the points raised, . the resolution*reafffrming the previous decision, and recommending that the Memorial Hall be at 'che end of Matene Street, was carriad. At the conclusion of the meeting a vote of thanks to> the chairman for his impartial and- fair control of debates, which aii times were nbt entirely peaoef ul, was strongly 'supnerted.
Help For Memorial Fund. At the" meeting of Ihe committee j it was reported 'that in response to i suggestions made, Mr. R. T. Mortibay, president of the Otaki Amateur Dramatic Society, had advised that | the society wa& agreeable to again presenting its successful comedy j play, "Grumpy." The offer was accepted with thanks, and the . date ! was fixed for April 26. A committee j was formed to help with the prepara'tions. ' Tributes Paid. The committee agreed to place on record its appreciation of the wonderful support Otaki Textiles, Ltd., and the manager, Mr. K. Hager, had at all .times given the memorial project. The chairman, Mr. Atmore, made special referenceto the excellent arrangemen'6 and the very successful outcome of the function held to mark the opening of ihe new factory, the funds of which were devoted to the memorial. Other speakers supported Mr. Atmore. .
