U.S. Making Better Atom Bombs Faster

WASHINGTON, April 11. Mr. David Lilientlial, chairman of the United States Atomic Energy Commission, told the House appropriations sub-comniittee today that the United States was making uetter atomic bombs faster than ever before. He said important advances fild been made. New designs of weapons had been tested smd found to be successful and further developments now were in progress. Work also had been done on the engineering development of weapons for greater ease of production and greater serviceability. Mr. Lilienthal told the committee it had been "pretty generally reeognised" that the United States' monopoly on the bomb was not a permanent one. He added that prospects were bright for using atomic energy to rau a naval ship, fly a plane and for irrigation and industrial purposes. The sub-ccmmif.ee approved 210,208,875 dollars for the production of atomic bombs and other nuclear weapons during the next financial year, compared with 191,293,838 dollars this year.
