NEW YOE.E, April 9. Desperate efforts are being made to rescue a three-year-old girl, Kathy Eiscus, wlio yesterday fell down the 14-inch vertical shaft of an old water well in San Marino, Oaliiornia. Rescuers late today sighted what they believed to "be a pink dress 85 f eet down the shaft which is believed to be 230 feet deep. It is hoped that the child is wedged at the 85 feet level well above the waterline. Relays of workmen have driven a new 30-inch shaft alongside the shatt holding the girl. From this they have scooped a. tunnel to the old shaft arid cut a window in its rusted metai casing. Giant cranes, bulldozers and crane shovels have been used and firemen have pumped air into the shaft to keep it clear for the child to breathe.
