Six elderiy worshippers were killed and "dozens ' iniured today when an ' exnlosion destroyed St. Marv's Catholic Church at Marion, Squth Daj^pta, whi.ch was fljleH with* "people ^F^itbig Palm Sunday 'Mass.' The explosion blew out twp walls. Thp'rqpf rP3,e in the air and thpn crashed dpwn pn the con^ gregation kneeling in the pews. An electric fan had been turned on because the church was packed and hot.* Immediatelv there was a terrific exnlosion in the basement. The poliGe belieye that a snark from a short circuit ignited fumes from a fuel furnace.The soimd of the exnlosion and the screams nf the injured and tranned worshippers broueht almost everv person in the small fown of Marion (population 750) to +he scene. They began digging in the ruins. Amonar the injured was Rev. •Toseph Zimmerman, who was wait!ne in the sacrlsty to enter the alta r when the explosion occurred. His ieg was broken.
