Basketball Association's Annual Meeting
The good attentlance of supportets and.blayers at the annual meeting of the Horowhenua Basketbali Association on „ Tuesday night augurs well for the sport in the coming season. In the absenee of the president, .Miss H, M. Chap-man-Cohen. Miss V. Aim occupied1 the chair and welcomed those pres= eht. . \ . ' . A very successful basketbali season had been experienced last year, said Miss Chapman-Cohen in lier report.' Thfoughout the district there had been an ever-widening ihterest in the- game ahd the vari' ous clubs were to be congratulated on the enthusiasm t>f their mem--bers. • • - The association had commenced its season With 28 teams in the competitions. 10 i'n the A grade, 11 ih the B grade and seven in the C grade. This meant that there were 250 giris piaying association basketbali each saturdav — a spiendid record for the district.. With the in-
crease in the number of teams each year, it had b.eeii found ■ that the two courts in the Levin Park Domain had' been insufftcient. AdVantage had- been taken of an offer- of- the USe of six courts at Horowhenua Co:lege, and the association was indebted to -the principai, Mr. N. A. Byrne, for his gesture in this direction agaih last Season.
During the 1948 season the association had entertained teams from Hut't varey, Te Kawau and Manawatu and these representative fixtures' had been a' gfea't sttccess in spi'te Of adverse weather Gonditions. continued the report. A representative team had travelled to New Plymouth to take part in the New ■ Zealand" tournament in August and a week later a second team had "taken part in the Rotorua tournament. The experience and social contacts made by the players who represented the district had been of great value _ to the girls, even though no trophies had been brought home. Miss Chapman-Oohen went on to speak of the trophies donated to the association during the season. Mrs. Morriarty and Mr. Mr. H. F. Birley had given a trophy each and she asked those present to record their appreciation of these gestures. Many helpers had made the 1948 season an encouraging one by giving up their time to basketbal1 businessT— referees> .the secretary, treasurer and executive committee. She expresse.d her thanks to them and in conclusion wished all players and clubs a successful and enjOyable season. ' ' Election of Officets.
