Bowling And Croquet Club Activities
With the bowling and croquet season drawing to' a close, there has been much aetivity on the greens over the past week in playing off competitions. Last Saturday afternoon, un'der ideal bowling conditions, the Town v. Country match was played. In this annual match the town c1ubs play the country clubs within the Manawatu Bowling Centre's area. Shannon was privileged to have the match this season. Below are ° the results with only skips of the various rinks being given. Country rinks are mentioned first and club' abbreviations are: Levin (L), Shannon (S), Foxton (F) , Hokowhitu (H) , Palmerston. North (PN) , Northern (N) , Terrace End (TE) , Manawatu (M) and Takaroa (T) . Wenham (L) beat Thompson (H) , Meads (L) lost to Bowley (PN) , Powell (L) Jost to Skogiund (N) , Bateman (S) beatClark (TE), Robson .(F) lost to Adams (N), Hughes (F) lost to Walker (M) , Hook (S) lost to Colquhoun (PN), Roach (S) beat Spring (T) . Prior to the commencement of play, Mr. V. J. Bateman, on behalf of the Shannon Club, extended a welcome to the visitors and wished them a very enjoyable day on the local green. He then introduced jMr. Skogiund, president of the 'Manawatu Bowling Centre, who outlined the rules of play fo.r the match. Mr. Skogiund also_ took the opportunity of * presenting Mr. Bateman with the certificate for winning the centre's single's championships for 1948. In the second round of the championship singles being played by the Women's Bowling Club, the following games have been completed: — Mrs. D. Aitchison beat Mrs. L.. Wilson, . Mrs. F. O. Burtt beat Mrs. R. R. Lin-d by default, Mrs. H. Stern beat Mrs. D. A. Fitzgerald, Mrs. S. L. Graham beat Mrs. I.' Peni. In the croquet section, the games played for the Butt Cup so far have resulted as follows: — Mrs. Bell (9), beat Mrs. Bovis (3), Mrs. Thorne (11) beat Mrs. Denton (12), Mrs. Parr (7 1/2) beat Mrs. Thorne. The score card for the sealed handieap yankee tournament is as follows: — Mrs. Bovis (26) v. Mrs. Parr (15), Mrs. Bovis (15) v. Mrs, Morrison (26) , Mrs. Bovis (26) v. Mrs BeU (24), Mrs. Bovis (26) v. Mrs Thorne (12) , Mrs. Bovis (26) v. Mrs. Denton (17), Mrs. Parr (26) V. Mrs. Morrison (8), Mrs. Parr (26) v Mrs. Bell (14), Mrs. Parr (26) v. Mrs. Thorne (10) , Mrs. Parr (26) v. MrS. Denton (4) , Mrs. Morrison (26) v. Mrs. Thorne (11), Mrs. Morrison (26) v. Mrs. Denton (12) , Mrs. Morrison (3) v.'Mrs. Bell (7), Mrs. Bell (26) v. Members of the bowling club a^e reminded of the gala day which will be held on the local green next Sunday. Play will commence at 9.30 a.m. Players are reqhested to be at the clubhouse early so that games can be arranged.
