FOODSTUFFS TO BE DEARER Received Thursday, 11 a.m. LONDON, April 6. Presenting his Budget in the House of Commops today, the Chancellor of the Excliequer, Sir Stafford Cripps, announced the following proposals : — A reduetion of tea duty by 6d. per lb, and sugar by l£d. per lb. The nrices to the public and manufacturers would not be altered. This wpuld reduce the necessary subsidies by £11,000,000 for tea and £22,000,000 for sugar. ,-y An increase in the price of the fofiowing commodities t6 meet an adjustment to the subsidies accaunt: Cheese, increased ,by 4d. per o.; meat, by 4d. per lb. ; margarine, by ld. per lb.; butter, by 2d. per lb. The • food subsidies should not, therefore, exceed £465,000,000 in a year. Sir Stafford said that beer would be reduced by ld. a pint, telephone fees would be increased, certain stamp duty charges and duty on the bonus issue of securities would be repealed, duty on light table wines would be reduced by 2/- a bottle and 12/- a gallon, death duties and legacy and succession duties would be moderately increased. "Income tax was too large a task for the moment," he added.
