Thousands of godwits, the small speckled brown birds which spend the summer months on the * New Zealand coastline, are now1 -wingtheir way northward across the ocean and two continents to their breeding grounds in Siberia and Alaska. Twice a year these lightweights make their 9000-mile journey, favouring the warm coastal harbours and tidal mudflats of New Zealand from about September to March, but nesting and breeding only in Siberia, Eastern Asia or Alaska during the other haif of the year,
