Start Of L.G.U. Foursomes Championship

WELLINGTON, April 5. The New Zealand Ladies' Golf Union 's autumn foursomes champion ship-to-urnament opened on the Wellington Golf Club 's course, Heretaunga, with an entry of 59 pairs from all parts of the Dominion. Light showers fell during the morning when a blistei'ing wind also made scoring diffieult, but the ' weather turned beautifully fine in the afternoon. The championship is being ' decide'd on a handicap of three-eighths of the difference between the combined hamlicaps of the pairs. This made matters extremely intoresting and re sulted in some exciting finishes. The most brilliant form in the first round was shown by Mrs. J. Ball (Wan ganui), New Zealand woman champion who rilso took the title at Christchurcl in 1946, and Mrs. R. S. Fullerton-Smith (Marton) who, as Miss Bessie Gaisford was national champion in 1931 and 1934. This experienced pair went oui , in 38 to stand 7 up on the Hutt pair. Mrs. Leighton and Mrs. K. Crichton ' Xli'S. Ball and Mrs. Fullerton-Smith won the tenth and eleventh holes to tako tlm game by 9 and 7. This redoubtable pair, however, hau lo strike their colours in the second round to the -two Wellington players, Mrs. Welton-IIogg and Mrs. Van Asch Tliough the Wellington pair were 2 dovvn at the tuni, they squared the -game at the fourteentli and won at the nineteenth. One of the surprises of the first 1 round was the defeat of the strong pair, Mrs. D. A. F. Crombie (Welling ton) and Mrs. H. Murray, Miramar open and club champion, by the Huti players Mrs. Ellison and Mrs. Fenwick. Other pairs who did well were Miss Zoe Hudson and Mrs. Tooniey (Christ-

ehurcn) and Mrs. Hatrick and Mrs. .Jlachan (Miramar). Miss Nutt and Miss Rutherford (Christchurch) had f. hard tussle to win the first round and inet their waterloo in the secand round The tournament will be continued to morrow.
