As from tomorrow tlie majonty oi' West Goast sawmiiis will reduee working hours as a result of a eut oi per cent. in the subsidy which llie Government pays for work done in sawmiiis cutting indigonous timber over and above the basic 40-hour week. Most of the mills will now work a 44-hour week. A 48-hour week, although not general, had been widelv observed in tlic West Coast mills. After ihe war t Ini Government agreed to eontinue to pa;, a substantial subsidy on overtime wages for the extra eight hours' work. The Government had now advised the sawmillers that it . will pay a wages subsidy for onlv four hours' overtime.
