The police had to intervene to prevenc reuurnea servicemen from ' attacking a man at an election meeoing neid by the Brisbane b"arrister and ieading communist, Max Julius. A man -who was assisting Julius caused the disturbance because he did not stand whiie the audience was singing the Nationai Anthem. Eight policemen held back members of the audience, who were ciosing in and1 swinging punches. Juhus, who is a candidate for tne piayoralty, was pelted with tomaooes and coumea out iZ> times. nis speech was drowned by the singing of "There 11 alwajs be an England" and "Britannia Rules the Waves." After tne meeting Julius was warned tnat members of the local branch of the Returned Servicemen s League would organise resisif ne spone in tne districo again. Tne Communists cancelled a meeting at Mount Morgan because tne scneduled sipeaxers were sev^xely battered at Rockhampton on the previous night. D. Oliver, the prmcipal speaxer at Rockhampton, ^s-aid that all the Communist sympatnisers at the Rockhampton meeting sufiered injuries, which included nroken rins and black eyes.
