New Zealand Decathlon Championship

AUCKLAND, March 25. With five events decided today D. Dephoff (Canterlmry) ieads in the first New Zealand decathlon ehampion(ship beiiig decided at Carlaw Parlc. Iv. H. Forsyth e (West Coast, North Island; is in second plaee, while the 1947 All Black J. K. McLean (Waikato) is in third position. The oompet ition will be eontinued tomorrow. Today 's events were slightly •marred by showers, the wet surface making footholds diffic.ult in the high and broad jump events. The decathlon points are computeo on the performance in eaeh event of the competitors. The remaining events to be decided are the 110 nietres hurdles, discus throw, poie vauil, javelin throw and 1500 metres. Dephoff, former national broad jump champion, recorded the best performances in the 100 metres, 400 metres and broad jump. The other outstanding performer in the running events was McLean who won his lieat of 100 metres in 11.6 and ran very strongly in the 400 nietres to win in 53.4. A very line performance was credited to J. H. Borland wlTo gained 840 points in the high jump with a leap of 6ft. 0 5-Sins.- Borland jumped 1 5-8 inclies bfetter then in the national event in whieh he was placed third. Forsytlie has been a consistent performer in all events, and is 110 points behind Dephoff. The national pole vault champion and holder of the Auckland decathlon title (W.
