" * Pleadiiig' lf'6r a .dismissal of the case against Ryan, Mr. W. GazJey, who appeared for both men, said that only Henry Alfred Tainui, owiier of the house, had given evidence of positive action on Ryan's part. Tainm, however, had uot been able to say whether Ryan's intcrference had been a meaus to facilitate >Sykes ' escape. Rejecting Mr. Gazley's application Mr. Goulding said the question of Ryan's part in the alleged offence wras oue for a jury to decide. Bail was granted to Ryan but in Sykes' case it was refused. Sub-lu-spector E. M. Thomas prosecuted for the police.
