Shortage Of Cement For Manawatu Builders

The faet that only 47,000 of the 280,000 tons of cement which will be prpduced in New Zealand this year are to be allocated to private builders was discussed at Tuesday 's meeting of the Manawatu Master Builders' Assoeiation and Industrial Union of Employers. It was pointed out that 208,000 tons were going to the State HydroElectric Department, 25,000 tons to the manufacturers of fibrolite roofing materials, but only a' small amount to the builders, who in the past had used 198,000 tons a year. The meeting decided to impress upon the New Zealand Builders' Assoeiation the necessity of importing cement, and it was stated that inquiries had shown that the' eheapest source of supply was Germany. It- was also decided to send a delegation comprising the president (Mr. J. P, Willson), Messrs J. A; Sylva and W. D. Bodell to wait on the Cement Controller in Wellington and ask for a larger allocation to Manawatu.
