Senator Arohur Vandenberg, the Republican foreign policy leader, said' today that the North AtiantiC Pact nations would meet any future aggressor with ali the force needed "to toeat him to his knees." He said that the united opposicion to aggression wouid inciude that of the United States. 1 "Tne new defence treaty is the best bet to keep the cold war from getting hot. I reassert that this is the grea&est war deterrent ever devised." Mr. Vandenberg, who was addressing a conference of American raayors, said that he was reserving Yud'gmeht on the new military lendlease aid1 programme to the North Atlantic Powers until the administration disclosed details of the programme, but he strongiy supported the pact as the "best possible peace enterprise in which the United States can engage in the self-interest of its own nadonai security." Congressional and military sources said1 today that President Truman's goal of an overwhelming
force to counter any attack aiiecting American security was at least two years away. These sources expressed the opinion that at the outset American arms s'hipments to Europe would do little more than provide protection against Com-munist-inspired internal uprisings.
