Action Against Australian Communist Secretary

ReceivM Tuesday, 11 a.m". SYDNEY, March 22. The combined Mining Unions' Council has demanded that the Federal Government withdraw the summonses served on the generhl secretary of the Communist Party, Mr. L. L. Sharkey. The council is the governing body of all unions in the coal mining industry. The council fesolved: "That this council emphatically protests to Ghe Ped'eral Government for its issue of summonses against a leader of a workihg-class political party. We view this action, as leaders of the coal mining industry, with grave concern, and we pledge our membership to support aiiy mqvement for world peace and ecOnomic security. We call on the Federal Government to withdraw its contemplated action against Mr. Sharkey and w© call for a repeal of the Crimes Act." Commonwealth security officers yesterday served' two summonses on Mr. Sharkey. The hearinjg of the summonses, which allege seditious utterances, vill begin next Monday. Mr. Sharkey Was reported to have said on March 4: "If in pursuit of aggressors the Soviet troops come to Australia, the Australian working class would1 welcome them in the way they were welcomed by the people of Europe when they were iiberated
