Borough Council Discusses Rugby Football

The views of the members of tio e Otaki Borough Council on rugby football were aired at Wednesday's meeting, when an application was received from the Horowhenua Rugby Union asking the council tn grant it the use of the Otaki Domain and consider a reduction of the gate percentage to the previ-1 ous amount of 10 per cent. The' application had been held over since the October meeting. Cr. E. J. Cook supported the application, pointing out that the' union -was set up to administer the sport and not make a profit. He contended that goo'd work was done by it in supplying free footballs to sehools and in many other ways. "As councillors it is .part of our duty to cater for the recreation and health of the children ti i the district-," he stated,* addingj that the union ha*d not had a good year financially. 4 The view was expressed that the eubseriptions were too low and that further revenue should be obtainable from this source. Cr. H. W. Hakaraia: What, pay more to get kicked around in the mud. My view is that the outlay for boots, jerseys and the two pairs of points necessary is all that players can be reasonably called upon to make. The council wanted to help the game, "but we want to help ourselves, too-, if we can," was the view fexpressed by one counciror. % It was unanimously* "decfded to .hccede to the request.
