Received Friday, 10.'30 a.m. LONDON, March 17. Mr. Douglas Houghton, the Labour candidate, was today returned in the Sowerbv (Yorkshire) by-election caused by the resignation of Mr. J. W. Belcher, former Parliamentary Secretarv to the Board of Trade. The result was: Mr. Douglas Houghton (Labour) 18,606; Lieut.Colonel P. Ryan (Conservative), 16,454. This was Britain's 50th by-elec-tion since the 1945 general eiection and 33rd in which Labour was cleTending a seat. The Government's win maintains its record unparalleledi in Parliamentary history of not having lost a sdngle constituency captured or held at thc general eiection.
