Competitors Still Keen As Grand Season Nears End

Ray Wickens)

(By

Having in mind a strenuous season of competition, both locally and througliout the district, members*- of the Levin Amateur Athletic and Cyeling Club, are to be congratulated on the -fare provided on Monday' evening.

Of those who competed in the sprint events, much could be said of the local girls who have maintained admirable form throughout the season. Their programme has been a full one with visits as far afield as Wanganui and Palmerston North where they met with considerable success. Particular reference can be made to the Rose sisters, Misses M. Cameron, D. Williams and N. Tyree who have displayed a keenness for competition not often found in the male section. These girls have attended every meeting within traveliing distance and their all round improvement' can be attributed to their earnestness of endeavour, an earnestness which has been evident in the manner in which they have acquitted themselves in all the events contested. Although the men's events did not attract large fields these were keenly contested. D. Meretana, a short stocki'.y built ruilner, appeared to be liberally treated by the handicapper and won the junior 100 and 220 handsomely. Even so, had his handicap been reduced, I think he would stiU have prevailed as his form during the meeting was extremely good. J. and P. Ryan also showed good form and are two athletes who believe in keeping fit. I. Mudge, that grand little runner over the longer distances, ran well to gain two seconds in the sprint. The highlight of the evening was his excellent run in the 'half mile and those who had the privilege of witnessing this event gave the lad a great ovation as he completed an electrifying sprint to the tape. As our season closes on March 28 with a special night's entertainment supporters 'can be assured of some splendid contests for the trophies that have been offered.' This meeting should prove a fitting conclusion to a highly successful season and with the continued support of both competitors and the public the future success of the Levin Amateur Athletic and Cyeling Club will be assured.
