Big Subdivision For Housing
A proposal to subdivide seven acfes of the Makuratawhiti tolock was brought ' bef ore the Otaki Borough Council, at a meeting last night, by Mrs. O. T. Webster. "J have instructed a surveyor to sur-j vey this property for roading, water supply, footpaths and for a housing scheme," said Mrs. Webster in her letter. "Will the council be in favour of this scheme, or be in ,favour of the land being taken for a sports ground? Plans at present are to 'build five houses this year an'd about 20 next year." Much discussion followed, the result of which was that councillors agreed that the decision on the war memorial site should no longer be delayed. ■ cr. Hakaraia considered a decision ha'd been made and reminded the council of . a motion agreeing to the acquiring of land. Other counc'illors supported the idea of the land mentioned in the letter being especially suited for a housing scheme. The Mayor, Mr. C. F. Atmore, stated that he had an open mind. The council woul'd take steps to assist the * housing Scheme mentioned, especially in relation to town planning. He had promised, however, that the public who had so generously supported the war memorial project should have an opportunity of again discussing matters. It was agreed to thank Mrs. Webster and to advise her that her communication had reeeived favourable consideration, but that no decision could be reached at present, although the council looked forward to being in a position to assist.
It was further agreed that the war memorial decision should be reached without further 'delay. New State Houses "It is hoped the constructional work on 19 units in Matene Street will be commenced during the next few weeks," said a letter from the Housing Construction Department. Flooding Of Streams The unsatisfactory state of the Rangiuru and Mangapouri Streams and the apparent apathy towards, flooding of some occupiers was stresse'd when a .letter was read from the Manawatu fcatchment Board, pointing out that the Land Drainage Act conferred powers on the council regarding stream cleaning. Councillors expressed regret that the occupiers of land should be so negligent as to fail to compLy, with this matter, which caused cohsiderable flooding an'd inconvenience to their neighbours and other residents. It was agreed to again serve notices on owner and occupier, and to take further steps if cleaning was not put in hand forthwith.
