Successful Open Meeling In Shannon The newly-formed Shannon Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club held its first open spprts meeting on the local domain last Saturday. A fine sunny day with an easterly breeze . inade conditions pleasant for' the onlookers, but the breeze was sufficlent to slow down -the cyclists. a little on the western side of the track. Some exeelient finishes were witnessed in both the athletic and cycling events. The club members have spent mudh tihie making improvements to the .grounds and the. cycling track. The patronage received from outside clubs was very encouraging and the' programme was completed in quick time without 'delay between events. The catering arrangements were in the hands of the Queen Carnival 'Committee. Prior to the commencement of the main* programme . a. short programme, Of children's -events was held. At the conclusion of the programme the Mayor, Mr. D. A. Fitzgerald, congratulated the club on its successful season and thanked the competitors and the publie foi their support. He made ref erence to the time given by Mr. L. Carter, who lent much machinery for work on the grounds, and Mr G. S Beer, the secretary of the club; whose efforts had done much tc revive the interest in athletics in the district. He also made specia] referenCe to the work of the committee and the oflicials whp had assisted at -the meeting.
