Penalties Imposed On Wharf Workers In Auckland

AUCKLAND, MarOh 15. Waterside workers again refus'ed to work the preference ship Northumberland -today and another 115 were placed on thiee -days' penalty, Watersiders who refused to work the Port Dunedin, Australia ;Star and, Pordsdale were also placed on -a penalty and the total numbe'r of unionists out of work is now 446, more thah one-ftfth 'of the union membership. The Northumberland has been idle since "Tuesday of last week because the watersiders •refused to" tinload soda ash for the Penrose glassworks. Because the freighter was declared a -preference ship .on Monday no extra gangs will be employed on ships now in port and no labour will be available for new arrivals until the ship is worked. However, the mini-mum re--juir-ements of labour will be provided o handle eommodities essent'ial to the ife of the coinmunity. The first over■ieas ship to berth since the preference jrder was made is expected to be the Broompark which is now in the stream with a cargo of sug'ar. She is expected lO go to the export- wharf tomorrow. r-he African J. Prinee is also in the itream because of eongestion at the port. She has a eargo of coal for the , liailways Department. The only overxeas ship due tomorrow is the Moon•rest which has a general cargo from Vustralia. She will anehor in the .itream. The Pacific Eanger is due on rhursday with a eargo of slag from Antwerp and the Tamaroa is due on the same day to discharge general 'argo and load .produce. Three more overseas cargo ships are due before the oiid of the week. The preference order also affeets r-oastal ships which -are not alreadj working. Four large coastal freighters and two colliers were working today Seven of the 11 overseas ships at the wharves were working normally today .
