Voltaic's great- victory in'the North Island Challenge Stakes, the brilliant finishing runs of Lord Manna and Demonic, which. won two of the big feature races, thrilling finishes, and the riding of W. J. Broughton, who saluted the judge on five occasions, were highlights of Saturday's racing at Trentham. . The day was fine a'nd the course, with the going a shade slower than for the first day, was in magnificent order. The attendance was good and the totalisator investments amounted to £192,855, compared with £198,919 on the second- day' last year. The total for the meeting was £360, 569^, which was £18,7061 below last year's. total of £379,276.

Following a perfect start the order was Citril, from Voltaic, Excellency and Tauloch, and Tauloch, who had been steadied early, was about four lengths from the leader, Voltaic, as they straightened up for the run home. They were travelling fast, and a furlong from the line Voltaic began to draw away from Excellency. He won well by a length and Excellency beat the fastfinishing Citril by half a length. There was daylight to Taujoeh. Voltaic's time was 3A seconds slower than the race record established by Excellency in 1948. Lord Foxbridge was a short-priced favourite for this event and after Lord Foxbridge, Servile, Princess Irene and Fleetness had been prominent early he led on to the course proper and looked to liave the race won a furlong from home. Then Abbotsford, Hit or Miss, and Waiford raced into the picture and Abbotsford, along the rails, got up to win by a nose from Lord Foxbridge over a length in front of Hit or Miss which beat Waiford by a short neck. Servile was a close fifth. M. Martinovich, rider of Lord Foxbridge, was fined' £10 for careless riding in that he had failed to ride his mount out. The early order was Harleyholm. from Hush, Leyma, Green Light, Frond, Lady's Man', Reveller, Golden Hope and Hostess and Harleyholm, Lady's Man. Hush and Leyma were in front into the straight. Leyma looked likely a hundred yards from the line, but Hostess finished" with great brilliance to win going away by half a length. Green Light was a close fourth and Golden Hope and Hush were next. Following the hearing of evidence from the owner and trainer of Hostess, and from K. Chote, who complained he had been engaged to ride Hostess in the Champion Hack Handicap, the ' committee decided that there had. been a contract and that Chote be paid as for a winning ride. The finish to this race was the best of the meeting and the winner, Outlook, again beat Ngaroto for the major honours after the judge had called for a photo. Determination attempted to lead all the way and she was only half a head away from the winner at the finish. Ngarobi appeared unlucky and after the race A. Johnson, rider of Cheerful Night, was charged with causing interference to Ngaroto about a furlong and a half from home and suspended by the committee for one month.
