Personal ' Lieut.-Colonel J. Sharp, of Ballance Street, was among those ,who received their New Year. honours decorations at Government House recently. He was awarded the O.B.E. Harvesting Of Opiki Crops The task of harvesting the crops of potatoes and carrots at Opiki is now under way. Long hours are being worked and many casual workers .. Jiave toeen employed to assist. Excellent crops are' reported in most areas. New Industry At Foxton A new clothing factory was established at Foxton this week. The factory; is a component part of a Wellington business with branches at Wanganui and Inglewood. The plant is the iatest automatic interlocking machinery and with its 14 bperators it is a welcome addition ito Foxton's already. progressive community. The new factory is engaged* in the manufacture of men's underclothing. Inspection Of Food Area The Soil Conservatlon and Rivers Control Council made a fourday visit to the Manawatu Catchment Board's district . this week, accompanied by members of the board. In the course of the tour members visited the lower flood plains of the Manawatu and inspected points at which river control and drainage works have been carried out or are proposed. The Buckley and Makerua fSrainage Boards' areas were also visited and an inspection made at Wall's spillway, where a pian was described to provide an alternative or supplementary course for the Manawatu River from that point across the Moutoa basin to the ponding area at Whirokino.
