Betting Without Deterrent

"MOTHER."

1 (To the Editor) 4 •- Sir, — I would like to thank Mr. N. M. Thomson for his letter in Tuesday's "Chronicie" regarding the Gaming poll. Many people, myself among them, were perplexed over the betting proposal. It was the case of the lesser of two evils. The churches had all put their view forward, but even then one- did not' know which way to vote for the best. I fee), along with Mr. Thomson, that had the law played its true part and jailed the offenders, bookmakers would, to a large exteni, have been eliminated. Now, to ' legalise the evil of betting will only ' ahow our young men and women to bet without deterrent. — Yours •

etc., Otaki, March 10.
