At the' end of tfie first day of the New Zealand amateur atfiletie -cfiampionsfiips today, Auckland leads by 16 points to 12 seored by Wellington, 8 by West Coast (North Island), 7 by Otago and 2 by Canterbury. , ' W. B. Hougfi (Auckland) beat all New Zealand records wfien lie did a 24ft; ,4in long jump. The previous record 'was field by tfie Australian, J. P. Metcalfe, wfio did 23ft 10£in in 1934. A. R. P. Eustace, wfio fiad twice beaten ;M. Curotta over the 100 yards, injured a shoul'der and did not start in the 120 yards. fiurdles or 220 yards and was beaten out of a place in tfie first heat of tfie 100 yards. W. Heron (Auckland) did 11ft 9in in a pole vault, 12 inches better than tfieheigfit of the second man, J. H. Borland (Otago). D, R. Of 14 noruinated only 10 stfirted and tfie fieats were run at a dawdling pace. The most promising hurdler seen in Canterbury for years, L. R. Smitfi (Wellington), won fieats in the 120 and 220 yards fiurdles very easily. . The fieats in the &80 yards provided good raees and interest tomorrow will centre in tfie ineeting of S. McKenzie, (W.C., N.I.), J. C. Grierson (Auclc-j land), K. Downie .(Auckland) and Cj Steel (Canterbury).
