Commonwealth Auditor's Sensational Report
CANBERRA, March 11. The Department of Aircraft Production met claims involving millions of pounds without a proper cost cheek, aecording to a report by the AuditorGeneral 0 (Mr. A. C. Joyce) fOr the linancial year 1947-48. The report said that one major eontraetor to whom £4,462,916 was owing did not have his costs investigated. The Australian Shipping Board had lost £1,843,038 in the previous year, and from its ineeption in 1941 untii June 30, 1948, it had lost £10,309,687 in trading operations of requisitionea ships. He had refused to certify the Stevedoring Indusfcry Commission accounts which were nevertheless presented to Parliament. Mr. Joyce commented: "This is not only a constituted failure to comply with the Act, but the submission to Parliament of the accounts which were not audited, is a proeedure to which the gravest exception should be taken."
