Playreaders Open Their New Season

The Levin Playreaders opened their 1949 season on Wednesday night with Esther McCracken's comedy "Quiet Weekend." The production of this very amusing play was in the hands of Mr. John Kissel and the happy manner ira which the large audience received it, at times bubbling over with laughter and halting the progress ,of the play, was proof eno'ugh of ithe excellent and capable qualities iof the producer and his cast. -Mr. Kissel took one of the parts (Jim Brent) himself, and the smooth running of the production side is a further trihtite to his manage- ■ ment, for it is always" difficult to act ■ and produce at the same time. The story of the play is so well - known that it is familiar to most ■ people and, with its irarq touch of L authenticity an'd realism, one is . made to believe that the hilarious ■ situations reaUy could happen and, [ -indeed, might have happened man-y j times. ; From the opening sequence, 1 when the handy man/Sam Pecker, is struggling with a smoking fire at ■ the Royd's country cottage in anticipation of the family's arrival, : until the last mad rush on Sunday l afternoon when the Royds dash l hack to the city, there is never a 1 moment without some amusing • situation being presented. ; The cast was as follows:— Mildred r Boyd, Mrs. J. Black; Arthur- Royd, - Mr. G. Ball; Dennys Royd, Mr. W. I Lemberg; Mary Jarrow ,Mrs. K. i Kirkcaldie; Miranda Bute', Miss J. CPough; Sally Spender, Miss J. • Clifford; -Beila Hitchens, Miss B. r Blenkhorn; Marcia Brent, Miss A. ; Browning; Adrian Barasford, Mr. i J. Todd; Ella Spender, Mrs.- L. 5 Hunt; Sam Pecker, Mr. G. Sorenson; Rowena Marriott, Mrs.* A. iHercuS; Jim Brent, Mr. J. Kissel. I /Mr. Kissel is to be cOngratulated 5 also for the fine and realistic man- ^ ner in which the stage was dressed.
