Ex-serviceman Forfeits Illegal Weapon
Charged with possessing an unlawful weapon and with havihg possession of an unregistered firearm, John Gardiner, a fencing contractor, of Manakau, appeared before Mr. A. M. Goulding, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court , Levin, yesterday. He was convicted and fined 10s on each charge. Costs amounted to £1 2s. The weapons referred to in the charges were an Italian 9 mm. Berratta (automatic) and an American Smith and Wesson .45 pistol. Gardiner had been a member oi the Maori Battalian overseas anc had brought the arms' back with him, said Sergeant W. Grainger in presenting the case for the prosecution. He would not suggest thai he had brought them back for anj ulterior purpose, but did not realise that it was unlawful-. He hac handed Phem over to the police when questioned about them. This was a typical case of an exserviceman bringing arms into- the country, commented Mr. Goulding ; when ordpring the forfeiture of the weapons. Gardiner was fined as stated above.
