WELLINGTON, March 10. The export of apples from Nevf ZeaJand during the current season will be approximately 600,000 cases. This was stated this evening by Mr. H. Turnex-, chairman of the New Zealand Apple and Pear Marketing Baard. He said • the major part of the exports would be
going to the United Kingdom under contract to °the Ministry of Food. Britain- would receive almost 500,000 cases in all. The balance available for .export would be dxsposed of to Canada a,nd the Continent. There was also a sinai! quantity for the United States. Mr. 'Turner said the British authorities had been consulted on all saies to e'ountries outside the United Kingdom and their* agreement to export arrangoments had been obtained. "The erop for this season is expected to be considerably lighter than last year'.s,"" said Mr. Turner, "consequently exports have been reduced m order to ensure that adequate supplies of apples and pears will be available tliroughout the year- on the lacal market. , Mr. Turner added that there wonld be no export of pears in 1949. He also announced the appointment of Mr. A. D. Headifen, formerly of Jhe of Agriculture, as secretary of the board.
