Cyclist Allen Stonex Draws Big Crowd In spite of unpleasant weather conditions, the appearance of Mr. • Allen Stonex, New Zealand repre- | sentative cyclist, at the, weekly 1 sports meeting of the Shannon Amateur Athietic and 'Cycling Club on Tuesday night drew a large , crowd soi spectators to the Shannon Recreation Ground. ^ The ipeeting, which .featured several invitation cycle events, was well supporte-d by cyclists and athletes from Levin, Otaki and Foxton and proved most successful. Although Stonex appeared to be showing the strain of almost 18 months' continuous track work, he . put up a sterling performance and . some brilliant sprinting was witjnessed in the 10 lap points race, Which was won by D. Smith of Otaki with a handicap of five points. In a special 500 metres match race, O. Connelly, of Levin and former Auckland scratch junUor defeated Stonex by the narrowest of margins. •Last Tuesday 's meeting will be the final evening meeting to - be P , con'ducted by the Shannon Club I this season and the very fine inter- | est by the ' Shannon public in the [ | weekly meetings, has been . main- | tained throughout. This was again | . demonstrated on Tuesday evening | when there was a response of £9 ls 8d to the collection taken up.
