NO SUPPORT FROM PALMERSTON NORTH CARPENTERS
After three-and-a-half hours of discusion a meeting of the Carpenters' Union in Palmerston last night de cided that it offer no financial assistance hy way of voluntary contrihution to the Auckland union in its present dispute. This was decided after the meeting had passed a motion to the effect that eaeh member contribute as much as he .was able and that the branch contri .bute £100, but this -motion was latei ruled out of order by the chairman (Mr. Cyril Mandeno) on the groundthat an amendment that no assistance be given, should have been put to the meeting first. This amendment was subsequently carried by 45 votes to 44. The mover of the amendment, which later became the motion, stated that the Auckland union, possibly through bad leadership, "had been lefi up an alley." If the present dispute eontinued it was likely to become so widespread that it would prove a -serious embarrassment to the Government in an election year.
