When Polio Hit Canada's Eskimos
OTTAWA March 8. Two health, experts reported today that the first inf'antile paralysis epidemic to strike Canada's 8000 Eskimos, originated with a native named Tutu and was aided by the Eskimo habit of naked multiple sleeping. The epidemic has taken thirteen lives and has ied to the quarantine o£ 400,0 squane miles. It struek hardest at and around Chesterfield Inlet, 300 miles north of Churchill. Manitoba. Eventually 60 of the 275 Eskimos within a 100-mile radius of Chesterfield showed signs of-the disease and 36 "vvere paralysed. The original carrier, Tutu, was not aflected by the disease.
