Two Carnivals A Week Has Been Swimming Club's Average

"Freestyle") _

(Bv

Things are very lively in the % swimming world lately. Now that the national ' championships have been eompleted a few new natnes have appeared and a few new records created.

Regarding more local affairs, one dares to make the remark that eyents have been moving a ljttle too swiftly. Since the carnival dates were allotted, the local elub has been engaged in two carnivals per week, and the next two weeks will still keep members moving.

There are three reasons for the strenuous programme. Firstly, the poor weather at the beginning of the season caused all the ciubs to start late. Second'y, the visit of the women tourists delayed the centre in allotting dates and, thirdly, the growing popularity of the sport. In regard to the latter reason, the enthusiasm reported in all clubs has given officiais the moral support to run carnivals, and all members have acquitte'd themselves very well indeed. This club has earned a very ;high name for its swimming prowess and general behaviour. This must be very pleasing to the club officiais for, although swimming is their primary consideration, the behaviour of the swimmers, both in the water and out, and of the supporters, must be taken into account. Red Cross Carnival On Wednesday, March 2, a small team of senior members ,took paist in the Red Cross (Palmerston North) carnival. Miss C. Turner was the cn'y msmber to gain a major success and she won the ladies' 50 yards freestyle. This wss a very nice effort, as Miss Turner has not been able to train as much as she would have iiked owing to a slight illness. Last Saturday a team journeyed to Palmerston North for thi Hokowhitu carnival and, although bv no means a strong representation, did very well. A 1 clubs} throughout tne centre were- represented and Levin gained third p^ace in aggregate points. Major successes were gaine'd by Miss Janet McClqne (2) and Messrs. R. Cameron, D. Batten and K. Lines, medley relay and flying squadron. Incidently, the Hokowhitu pool I is set in very picturesque suriroundings. The gardens and trees, jalong with a pleasant afternoon

and a well conducted carnival, he'pe'd make a most enjoyable j outing.' j The following have been selected to represent the Levin club at | the Manawata championships, which will be held at Dannevirke jon Tuesday, March 15: — | Junior girls' 50 yards freestyle. j — June Miller, Diana Rathbone. | Intermediate girls' 220 yards ; freestyle. — Janet McC.'une. Next Saturday the Foxton carnijval will take place and a bus will i :p!?ve the stand at 2.15 p.m. Satlurday afternoon carnivals are very ; popular this year and once again ! the local club is sending a large j team. ' There are two important events on the programme which will be ^wum the first time — junior boys' rtelay, comprising teams of seven boys to swim 50 yards each, and junior girls, teams comprising five i girls to swim 25 yards each.
